Analysis of Digipacks

Hi everyone!

I will be analysing some digipaks to understand better the purpose of a digipak and the kind of images that suit each side. This analysis will help me when it comes to designing my own digipak.

Camila Cabello- Romance Album

In terms of colour, her digipak is predominantly RED. This reflects the romance theme very clearly and gives it an adult and passionate feel, that reflects Camila's breakthrough in her romantic relationship with Shawn Mendes, which finally became a reality.

The front cover has a dramatic and glamourous image of Camila in a voluptuous red skirt with her feet in her water. Again, the red outfit leaves her legs and shoulders bare and has a suggestive undertone. Camila's dramatic pose, which again highlights the theme of the album, is matched by the actors and actresses in the background who also have passionate and artistic poses, giving the album a state of the art feel. The dark tones and warm colours give it a dramatic look, and the focus of the light is on Camila.

The back cover has a gothic drawing of a heart that gives a Romantic feel of antique print, matching the artistic glamourous feel of the front cover. The simple black and red look remind the audience of a Victorian manuscript or at least that old and classy feel, which matches with the heartfelt and raw passionate tone of some of her songs, such as 'Shameless'. Camila also includes, in a gothic font, the songs in her album.

The packaging inside is one main image in the form of a red collage and a close-up of her face in the rain. The motif of water is used again here to create a dramatic romantic feel which is usually featured in romance films. There are two Greek-style columns on both sides with white outlines and other close-ups of her face and neck with jewellery on black outlines and tones on the sides. This gives the packaging image a candid and raw feel with the same gothic and vintage look that is the main feature of this cover.

This digipak, with its vintage feel and red colour, clearly captures the tone of the album- a passionate, old-school love, and Camila's own sophisticated essence which is also reflected in her previous album, "Camila".

Ariana Grande- Thank You, Next Album

This album is equally as sophisticated as Camila's in Ariana's own style, as they are both pop singers with some upbeat songs and other deeper ones. Her album is all about self-growth and loving who she is, as well as saying goodbye to the past, as in her single "Thank You, Next". This is reflected in her own sophisticated style as well.

The front cover has an image that looks as though it had been taken with a disposable camera. the upside-down image will be a feature in Ariana's style and can also be seen in her album "Sweetener". The fact that the image does not occupy the whole front cover also contributes to its polaroid feel, which, as in Camila's vintage look, contributes to a more sophisticated and candid image of her at the same time. Her black lipstick matches the black outline of the cover and the use of high contrast in the image gives it its sensual and sophisticated feel, which is matched by Ariana's lack of attire and pose.

The back cover is very simple, as in Camila's album, with a black-and-white look and a rather gothic font with a small font size, making it look elegant and poised, matching the front cover's minimalistic look.

Inside, we have a baby pink disk. Its pop of colour complements the dark and polaroid-like undertones and acts as the signature trait for Ariana's style. The picture on the left of the disk also has pinkish undertones to complement the black silhouette, therefore continuing with the sophisticated and elegant feel of the front cover. The close-up focuses on Ariana as a singer, as the disk is all about her, which matches the Pop genre conventions.

There is also a separate booklet packaging that comes with the digipak and includes the lyrics of the songs and pictures of Ariana with her signature ponytai and hoops. This comes in glowing fuchsia tones that clash with the previous style but match Ariana's glamourous pink style that her audience associates with her.

I like this feature booklet, and might even make a sample of it in my own digipak for the song "False Confidence".

Next Steps:

Both Camila and Ariana are Pop singers who have a sophisticated style in their digipaks that focuses on their own image as artists. For my own digipak, I will keep in mind that I will need continuity from my music video to the digipak in terms of the image that I want to portray of the artist. I might follow this style and make the back cover very simplistic compared to the front cover- and reflecting the singer's style throughout.
