Inspirational Artist: SHY Martin

SHY Martin is one of the artists from which I am taking inspiration.
Her music videos are very aesthetic and her genre is similar to that of the song which I have chosen. I really like her style and I want to partially inspire my own with her vibe.
Out of My Hands- Music Video:
● Narrative style (narrative, performance, concept)
Her narrative style is that of a concept- it is not exactly narrative but the concept of the song is reflected in how she is stuck in her house overthinking and missing the person she writes about.
● Representation of gender, ethnicity, class and age
The music video reflects her as an artist, it reflects her style and focuses exclusively on her.
● Editing pace, montage/continuity editing?, effects and transitions used (symbolism)
The editing pace is rather slow, and calm, reflecting the mood of the song as both a sad song but with ambience and rhythm. The slow editing of the verses is juxtaposed with some time-lapse sections during the chorus (which is more rhythmic), creating a mood of how time is going very slowly and fast at the same time, and she is stuck in her mind doing nothing.
● Cinematography: shot sizes, angles and framing (and what they show/symbolise)
There are many close-ups of her and the flowers, to focus on her as an artist and create a distorted view which is then clarified through the use of long shots from different angles which reflect how she is overthinking in her room.
The camera angles are sometimes high angles and low angle shots to, again, convey her overthinking process by portraying her in the same position but through different perspectives.
Some shots use a kaleidoscopic effect which creates a distorting view and a sense of detachment from reality, as well as an aesthetic effect.

● Mise-en-scene: Lighting (mood), colours (symbolism), performance, facial
expression, body language, costumes (symbolism), settings (symbolism - and
number of changes of settings)
She uses the motif of flowers to match the aesthetic of the video; the colours are very desaturated in some parts, which contrasts with the bright orange of the flower, creating a fading aesthetic view. At other times there is a light pink hue over the footage, and there is also filming at the 'golden hour', and a full red-lighting section. It is very versatile, showing her different moods and development as an artist.
Her performing style is very calm and Indie-style, she plays the part of a heartbroken singer. There are various settings used, but most are inside her house; there is a bed, a bathtub and an empty room, all looking very desolate and aesthetic at the same time, mirroring the mood of heartbreak.

Reflection:
I really like some of the elements of her aesthetic- I might try to do some kaleidoscopic shots, and I already had in mind doing some time-lapse. I really like the bathtub shot although I would go for more natural lighting and less de-saturated colours, as my song won't have such a dramatic style. I definitely want to film at golden hour as well, at least for the ending of the song.
Stay tuned to find out the song I have chosen!
xx Natalia
