Dylan-

She is an Indie singer I just discovered. Her style is much brighter in terms of colour palette than SHY Martin, which is a nice contrast that I can work with to put together my idea.

I like her genre and her vibe, which I think matches a little bit more the 'vibe' that Julia Michaels has. This picture for her single "Nineteen" is beautiful; I love the blue sky as the background, and I might use that as inspiration when it comes to creating my digipack.

Nineteen- Music Video Analysis:

· Narrative style (narrative, performance, concept)

The narrative style is flashbacks, which matches the concept of the song. There is a main time frame of the singer thinking about when she was "Nineteen", and there are flashbacks where she goes back to all the good times she had. Again, the narrative style matches perfectly the concept of the song, so I need to think about the main message of my own song and how to approach it. Perhaps flashbacks would be a good idea for some parts of the video...

· Representation of gender, ethnicity, class and age

Again, this music video focuses on creating an image of the artist as a rebel who loves music and vindicates living freely, "running from responsibilities", etc. The urban settings, disposable camera footage, colourful clothing and lively and carefree performance all help create that style.

· Editing pace, montage/continuity editing?, effects and transitions used (symbolism)

Most of the flashbacks are put together in the form of a montage, which creates an idea of putting together all the good moments and feeling nostalgic for the good times she enjoyed. Just like in the previous music video, the editing pace is faster in the chorus (where it is perhaps too fast at times) and creates a sense of the overwhelming fun she had. The more calm verses with a more nostalgic mood are accompanied by a slower editing pace.

Verses filmed at much slower editing pace

· Cinematography: shot sizes, angles and framing (and what they show/symbolise)

The camera is hand-held for most of the time which creates a feeling of authenticity that matches the style Dylan wants to create for herself. The camera is constantly moving which creates a very dynamic feel along with canted angles that straighten up and twist again. She is usually at the centre of the frame (except for the flashbacks in the chorus) although the camera angles do alter.

Rule-breaker, she is dancing, the camera is hand-held and she is free and happy

· Mise-en-scene: Lighting (mood), colours (symbolism), performance, facial expression, body language, costumes (symbolism), settings (symbolism - and number of changes of settings)

There is wide use of backlighting from the Sun, creating a nice faded light that looks almost angelic and contributes to the nostalgic feeling or post-partying feeling usually featured in music videos. She is standing on a sort of rooftop when writing the song, which is symbolic for her looking down/back to all the memories she has. Her style is very urban with ripped jeans, rings, multiple necklaces, hoop earrings and heavy eye makeup. The colours are also very bright during the flashbacks and more faded pastel during the present time (which is a look I was thinking of including in my music video already).

Reflection:

I really like the faded sunlight and the use of bright colours in the daylight filming. The disposable filming might also be of use here, and I am planning on having some slow-motion shots.

Stay tuned to find out how everything goes!
